You test positive. How likely is it that you’re sick?

A test that catches 90% of sick people sounds reliable. What a positive result means, though, also depends on a number people tend to skip: how common the disease is in the first place. On the left are 1,000 people. You will count the answer yourself.

01预测Predict

A disease affects 1% of people. The test catches 90% of those who have it, and wrongly flags 9% of healthy people. Your result is positive. Roughly how likely is it that you have the disease?

Count the positives

Once you save a prediction, all 1,000 people on the left take the test. A dark ring means a positive result; orange means the person really is sick. Keep only the positives, then see how many of them are orange.

Where this model applies

The dots show expected counts, not a random sample: a real group of 1,000 might hold 7 sick people or 13. Dot counts are rounded; probabilities use the exact formulas.

The numbers are illustrative and do not describe a specific real test. Sensitivity and false-positive rate are treated as fixed, though in practice they shift with the population and how advanced the illness is. Repeat testing assumes conditional independence, which often fails in practice.

“Prevalence” means the share among the people being tested. People who come in with symptoms have a much higher base rate than the general population, so the same positive is more trustworthy for them.
